In Algeria, MAW held a two-day training for local organisations and state agencies to be more effective in their conservation efforts. Five community service organisations (CSOs) working in environmental protection, biodiversity, and wetland conservation and four prominent state agencies were in attendance. The training solidified the creation of a local National Observatory of the Wetlands knowns as “Observatory of Wetlands Sebkhets of the Aures”, or OZHCSA for short. Also, during the training, participants received the tools they needed to monitor and assess the status and trends of the region’s wetlands and to analyse and explain the causes of changes. The aim of the Mediterranean Wetlands Observatory is to help decision-making towards improved wetland conservation and management.
